One slow drain or several fixtures backing up?

Use the affected-fixture pattern to organize the service request without assuming a blockage location or repair method.

The direct answer

Start by listing the affected fixtures and any connection between their symptoms. One slow basin and several fixtures backing up need different review questions. Neither pattern, by itself, proves the precise blockage location, a broken sewer lateral or the right equipment to use.

Use observations you already have

Use what you have already observed. Does the issue stay at one sink, tub or shower? Did water appear somewhere else when another fixture was normally used? Does the problem affect more than one room or unit? Record the sequence and any unusual sound or odor without recreating the backup. Adding water to obtain a video can increase the affected area and rarely improves the initial request enough to justify it.

Stop affected use and report spills

If wastewater is coming out or fixtures are backing up, stop using the affected fixtures and keep people away from the water. Avoid contact, especially where electricity or unstable surfaces may be involved. For a suspected public sewer spill within the City of San Diego, use the City's reporting route. Outside that jurisdiction, use the responsible local utility. Contacting AWC is not a substitute for public spill reporting or emergency response.

Provide access and service history

For the repair review, show the fixture, its surrounding area and any existing accessible cleanout from a safe position. Tell the reviewer what products or equipment have already been used. Include prior clearing dates and whether the improvement lasted hours, weeks or longer. This helps distinguish the present symptom from the history without assuming the earlier work failed.

Define the first service boundary

The first scope should explain the intended service and its stopping point. If clearing restores flow, ask what remains unknown about the pipe. If additional inspection or repair is recommended, ask what observed evidence supports it. Send the affected-fixture list to AWC before agreeing to a broad replacement based only on a symptom description.
